A story with a happy ending

Follow-up clinics Originally I had expected to go home to the south coast the day I left hospital, but SCGH wanted me back for two clinics in the week following my discharge, so Geoff headed back and my sister and I went to stay with our cousin. I took the opportunity to visit a few friends, see a movie, eat out.....

Bits of me needing dressings. The extra flaps are where the drains used to be

Breast Clinic

I was seen by the surgeon and the breast nurse, basically to look at the result and to discuss the pathology. The news was all good. No invasive cancer was detected, so I definitely didn't have to have chemo or radiotherapy. Since I had no lymph nodes removed I was not at risk of getting lymphodema. I was sent off with a little satin pillow to cushion the seat belt, and an appointment for a year later.

Plastics Dressing Clinic

Dressings on my breast, abdomen and belly button needed to be changed. During the weekend before the clinic my belly button had begun to get inflamed, so I was concerned about it - sure enough, it was infected. What I didn't know was that the abdominal wound had torn a little, and that it, too, was infected. I had complicated cleaning and dressings and was sent home with new antibiotics, large supplies of dressings and ointments, and instructions for Geoff on how to look after my wounds.
